It's a common fact that using a long exposure in photography can create a very dramatic effect in the finished image. Long exposure photography usually requires a tripod to stabilize the camera because the slightest amount of motion can cause the image to blur. Sometimes the blur is purposefully used to add artistic effect. Without being aware of this fact, photography shot with low light or without stabilizing your camera while using a long exposure can produce images that are ruined.
With an intimate relationship long exposure can be a good thing as well. Developing a longterm commitment to each other can produce a deeper love and greater fulfillment over time. This is not always the case when we have long exposure to our extended family. Without some external stabilizing factor to lean on, it seems that the longer we are exposed to extended family, the greater the chances are of the relationship becoming blurred and out of focus. Many of us have experienced that uncomfortable feeling of the "long exposure effect" when it comes to family.
The same level of love and commitment that exists in a relationship
with our partner is often lacking with extended family. We want to believe that our love is the same, but in all honesty it's not. The
day-to-day commitment and sacrifice that helps us grow closer together
in relationship is just not there with extended family. We can always
find an exception to any rule, but I believe that we have much more
to lose without the connection to our intimate partner than we do
without our extended family. This idea does not diminish the significance of extended family, it actually allows for a healthy boundary to be established.
It's my belief that we are all hard wired this way as part of our
DNA, otherwise we would never be able to leave home and start a life on
our own apart from family. As a result, time spent with extended family is best served in
quick snapshots with the best possible lighting and ideally in short
exposure. Like digital photos, it's fast, easy to mange and more
enjoyable overall.
The next time you plan to visit extended family or
they plan to visit you, may I suggest choosing a short exposure. Your
final pictures have a greater chance of not being ruined by an
undesired dramatic effect.
