British import Amy Winehouse has hit the states with an unmistakable thud on her second album "Back To Black". Right from the opening beat of "You Know I'm No Good", I was captivated by this pint sized soul, jazz and R&B singer songwriter from North London. Her new record is clearly a throw back homage to some of the greats like Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, The Ronettes and The Shirelles. Amy's voice is a mix of smoky, sultry and smooth with a deep infectious quality that resonates with confidence.
"Love Is A Losing Game" is a brilliant ballad of lovers regret compressed neatly into 2:35 and quickly becoming one of my favorites. "Rehab" is a playful but rebellious romp that finds Amy refusing to go to rehab saying; "no, no, no!" This song in particular conjures up the best of the early sixties girl group era. Amy Winehouse has barely reached her mid-twenties, still she blasts out her vocals like a seasoned old soul.
If you are interested in sampling a record that's slightly quirky, entirely unique and packed with irresistible charm, then "Back To Black" is your bag baby. Be warned, it's filled with more estrogen than testosterone, but that should not detour any guy that loves the ladies. You'll need only this one CD in your Camaro
to make your baby doll melt into your bucket seats. This is Amy's first
U.S. release, but I'm convinced it's headed for being an enduring
classic, sure to be included in the list of 2007 Grammy nominations.
Place this CD front and center in your collection, mix up a pair of perfect rum drinks and let Amy Winehouse do the rest.
Her voice really knocks you back. I like "Rehab"!
